Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
MGD is the blocked-oil-gland problem behind most dry eye, and the one most patients were never told they had.
The meibomian glands in your eyelids produce the oil that keeps tears from evaporating. In MGD, these glands become blocked or stop working, so the tear film breaks down and the eye feels dry, gritty, or irritated.
Because MGD is progressive, glands that drop out do not come back. Finding and treating it early protects the glands you have.
